Just off Exit 18 of the Southern State Parkway, nestled among suburban homes, is a hidden gem - the only remaining horse ranch on the south shore of Nassau County.

In this week's 'Journey to..." episode we travel to Lakewood Stables in West Hempstead, where Patch personality Steve Strangio takes us along for a wild ride along the scenic bridle paths, gets some pointers from young equestrians and even saddles up for his first horseback riding experience. (If you don't count the carousel at Nunley's that is.)

Click on the video above to join him on his trailblazing adventure to this unique local landmark but brace yourself - the ride may be bumpy.

Major Deegan hates me with all his heart. He threw me off and tried to kick me...
Rio kicked me too, and I fell off a few others. Still can't wait to get back on a horse...

Hey Natalie. Sorry the Major was so mean, but I'm sure you'll find a horse that works best for you. That was my very first time on a horse and it felt amazing. Just remember that the horse can sense how you feel, so just be fearless :)

Great memories go into this place! I rode here for three years and I left in November of 2010. I love the horses there and the staff! My four top favorite horse there are Soho, Tess, Gilligan and Rio. This barn has changed over time. This place isnt really the same from when I started riding there. My new barn is amazing! I cant wait to visit Lakewood again!

I'm sure they'd be happy to see you there. It just feels like this sanctuary that you can explore. The new indoor stables are sure to be amazing once construction is finished.
