Trustee Patricia Canzoneri-Callahan says she uses her late husband's words for guidance as she is sworn into office Monday night.
It was an emotional night at Village Hall Monday as newly-elected Trustee Patricia Canzoneri-Callahan was sworn into office to finish out her late husband's term. It was around this time last year, that Jim Callahan was taking the same oath of office, surrounded by his wife and four children, after he had won a fourth term on the village board. Just 52 days later the 42-year-old lost his brief battle with cancer. "It's a little bit bittersweet for me because Jim Callahan is not here with us this evening," Gail Wakefield, co-chair of the village's celebrations committee, said at the start of the program. "I miss him terribly, he's my friend and always will be, but I'm so happy that his wife is here this evening as our newly elected trustee…

Patricia Canzoneri-Callahan will serve a three year term on the village's Board of Trustees.
Patricia Canzoneri-Callahan won Tuesday's special election in the village of Malverne, securing a three-year term on the Board of Trustees. Canzoneri-Callahan, of the Malverne Independent Party, earned 767 votes compared to Dr. Carol Hassett's 537 votes. Village Clerk and Elections Commissioner Terry Emmel announced the results shortly after polls closed at 9 p.m. and the votes were counted. Canzoneri-Callahan had been serving on the village board since July, when she was appointed by Mayor Patricia Norris McDonald to fill the seat left vacant when her husband Jim Callahan passed away until the special election was held. "This is a very meaningful win because I can now finish out my husband's term," Canzoneri-Callahan told Patch Tuesday …
Dr. Carol Hassett and Patricia Canzoneri-Callahan hit the polls Tuesday.
We won't know who the winner will be in Tuesday's special village election in Malverne until polls close at 9 p.m., but both candidates made sure to cast their votes at the fire house today. Dr. Carol Hassett, of the Common Sense Party, hit the polls early this morning to cast her ballot. Patricia Canzoneri-Callahan, of the Malverne Independent Party, stepped into the voting booth shortly after 4 p.m. joined by her four children. (Her youngest, Christina, asked to pull the lever.) Canzoneri-Callahan's brother, Stephen, and parents, mother Judy and father Joseph Canzoneri, a former Malverne mayor, cast their votes shortly after. Deputy Mayor Joseph Hennessy - who celebrates his birthday today - also voted during the 'evening rush.' As of 3…

Malvernite Tom Grech encourages his neighbors to vote for the Malverne Independent Party candidate on March 20.
Dear Neighbors: As a Trustee of the Malverne Public Library for the past several years and a resident of Malverne for over 10 years, I believe I know and understand how the Village works. I also know who rolls up their sleeves and gets things done while looking out for the taxpayers. I am writing to request your support to elect Trustee Patricia Callahan. She understands that working together with others is a sign of strength, that promoting laws and ordinances that keep the small town feeling of Malverne is a good thing and that governing a Village such as Malverne requires good judgment along with an open minded perspective. Sincerely, Tom Grech

Hassett submitted her paperwork on Feb. 14, the last day for candidates wishing to run in the March 20 special election to file their nominating petitions with Village Hall, according to clerk Terry Emmel. She'll be running under the newly formed Common Sense Party. She'll be going up against Canzoneri-Callahan, the Independent Party candidate and Callahan's widow.
