Fr. Thomas Donohoe Dies at 75

West Hempstead native remembered for uniting multi-ethnic congregation in Long Beach.

When he wasn’t leading his congregation at St. Mary of the Isle Church in Long Beach, Fr. Thomas Donohoe, West Hempstead native, was often reading books about the Civil War, collecting memorabilia related to the war, or visiting battlefields such as Antietam and Gettysburg. “[Abraham] Lincoln is important because he got us through a war that divided the nation, and saved our country,” Donohoe told Patch about the 16th president’s legacy on the 200th anniversary of his birthday in 2011. “We tend to forget now our founding fathers like Washington, as well as Lincoln. It’s important to take days to remember them.” Last week, West Hempstead and Long Beach residents gathered at funeral services to remember Donohoe, who died in Amityville on …

Paone was born in Haverhill, Mass. on Feb. 10, 1922, but spent most of his childhood in the mining town of Archbald, Penn. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Scranton in 1944, but was not able to attend his graduation ceremony because Uncle Sam called. West Hempstead Grad, Sonia Sethi, Dies at 24

Memorial services will be held at C. Wagner Funeral Home in Hicksville on Tuesday.

"Genuine," "compassionate," "beautiful," "brilliant" and "caring" — rarely do so many words describe one individual, but these were just a handful of the many terms used to describe Sonia Sethi on her Facebook wall a day after it was announced that she had passed away. Sonia, a 2005 graduate of West Hempstead High School, was diagnosed with a high-grade form of sarcoma in August 2011. According to the National Cancer Institute, "sarcomas are malignant (cancerous) tumors that develop in tissues which connect, support, or surround other structures and organs of the body." Seth Sethi, Sonia's brother, said the sarcoma, which is very rare and nearly incurable, was a surprise to everyone. "It was a real shock to us," Seth said. "Everything was …

I met Sonia many days walking into Cornwell Avenue School with my three children. She was always pure sunshine. When my kids went to Middle School, Sonia was there also giving me guidance about their science projects. The last day that my daughter and I looked at colleges for her to apply to, Sonia was there at Barnard. My daughter ended up attending Barnard. It might not have been part of her …   more ›

I grew up in Malverne and graduated from Malverne High School and I lived in Burbank for seven years. Had I known Frances was there when I was there, I would have looked her up. When I arrived in California I purposely looked for an area that was the closest thing I could find to Malverne and that was Burbank. I can't help but think Frances did the same thing.   more ›
