Happy With School Budget/Board Election Results? [Poll]

Share your thoughts on the outcome of Tuesday's vote.

The Malverne and West Hempstead 2012-13 school budgets passed Tuesday as residents approved Malverne's proposed budget of $48,597,767 and West Hempstead's $55,188,693 fiscal plan. Malverne school district voters also okayed Proposition #2, which authorizes the district to tap into $312,000 of its Capital Reserves Fund to repair the roof of the high school gym, and selected two new school board candidates - Michael Taylor and Josephine Bottitta. Meanwhile, West Hempstead re-elected two current trustees, Carole Rilling and James Mariano, to seventh terms and picked former PTA President Karen Brohm to fill a vacant seat on the board. Are you happy with the results of Tuesday's votes? Vote in the polls below and tell us in the comments section.

Many people went to Facebook with comments about people promoting themselves outside the school. If there was foul play maybe it should be looked into. I myself did not see this I was there at 7:30am, I believe this all happened at night.   more ›

West Hempstead Approves School Budget, Mariano, Rilling and Brohm Win

Residents elect Trustees James Mariano and Carole Rilling, and Karen Brohm to Board of Education.

West Hempstead school district residents approved the proposed 2012-2013 school budget Tuesday, and elected James Mariano, Carole Rilling and Karen Brohm to the Board of Education.   There were 1,027 votes in favor and 650 against the $55,188,693 proposed budget, which is 1.46 percent higher than the 2011-2012 budget. The budget raises the tax levy - the portion of revenue that taxpayers are responsible for - by 2.58 percent. This figure is actually under the tax cap created by New York State law and therefore, only required a majority of voters for it to pass. Trustees Mariano and Rilling were re-elected to their seventh three-year terms on the school board. Mariano defeated Signorile, 990 votes to 519 votes. Rilling beat Fogg, 911 votes …

Great news? Great news for who? The continued rise in school taxes is killing property owners across the entire state. 775 districts across New York with 57 in Nassau alone. How many "administrations" do you think we need? Soon there won't be anyone left to pay all these tax increases. The govenor better wake up before it's too late.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: 'Why I Am Voting for Sherwyn'

Lakeview resident and activist Bea Bayley explains why she's supporting Besson for Malverne school board.

Why I am voting for Sherwyn: As long as I have known Sherwyn he has always been a champion for the children of district 12. He demonstrates this as a father, a coach and as an educator who has been identified by the student body and parents as a valuable mentor. As a conscientious educator, he spoke out when he saw that students were not being afforded the full advantage of a well-rounded education. He spoke out when he saw that fellow teachers were being harassed or forced out. While others have based part of their platform on the aspect of bullying, Sherwyn is the only one who has put his career and livelihood on the line to put an end to it. Despite suffering financially and professionally he continues to speak out against wrongdoing. …

Letter to the Editor: Vote Bottitta and Kasal for Malverne School Board

Malvernite asks District 12 residents to join him in voting for Josephine Bottitta and Kathleen Nolan Kasal for school board.

Letter to the Editor: Tomorrow's election is an interesting one in that five people of various backgrounds, skill sets and motivations are running for the two open spots. I personally think it's great that this is not an uncontested race and one with plenty of enthusiasm all around. All candidates bring something to the table. For me, the two candidates best suited for the position based on their experience, reasons for running, and desire for real change are Joey BOTTITTA and Kathleen Nolan KASAL. I recently got to know Joey but have admired her perseverance from afar for her efforts with Project Enroll Now (PEN).  BOTTITTA's involvement in the community and hard work with PEN demonstrates she is not afraid of difficult challenges and can…

Letter to the Editor: 'Joann Krudis Would Be Asset to Malverne School Board'

Lynbrook Fire Chief Anthony "Zemo" DeCarlo endorses Malverne school board hopeful Joann Krudis.

To the Taxpayers of School District 12, I'd like to tell you a bit about Joann Krudis.  I have had the distinct pleasure of knowing Joann for the past 7 years when she became part of our Lynbrook Fire Department family. Joann is passionate and hard-working. She rises to a challenge regardless of how big or small the task. I have known her to advocate for what is right even when she knows it might not be popular opinion. Joann has supported our fire department through fundraising and coordinating various events. She would be an asset to any organization, especially the Malverne Board of Education, because of her passion for education and motivation to strive for excellence in all walks of life. I am proud to endorse Joann Krudis for …

Letter to the Editor: 'Support West Hempstead School Budget, Rilling and Mariano'

A parent of two West Hempstead graduates gives his thoughts on Tuesday's school board vote and budget elections.

To the Editor, Though disturbed by what I’ve been reading and hearing about the upcoming budget vote/school board elections, I have thus far remained silently, and uncharacteristically, on the sidelines. In the interest of our children, and out of concern for the very tomorrows of our West Hempstead, I feel compelled to speak out. Joan and I have been West Hempstead residents for 27 years. Both of our daughters are proud graduates of the West Hempstead Public Schools, K-12. Francyne and Melissa went on from our wonderful West Hempstead schools to graduate from Binghamton University. Recently, Francyne received a Doctorate in Psychology (Psy.D. -- yes, we now have to bow and call her Doctor), and Melissa is currently working toward her …

Letter to the Editor: Vote for 'Experienced Carole Rilling' For School Board

A 27-year West Hempsteader and mother of three urges others to re-elect Trustee Rilling.

Dear Editor,                                                                       Experience … it is touted, in our culture, to be the integral component of a resume. Advanced levels of experience cultivate expert skills and sound judgment. Eighteen years as a Board of Education member, 38 years as an educator, 12 years as a mother of a child in the West Hempstead School District and 39 years as a West Hempstead tax-paying resident give School Board Incumbent Carole Rilling a unique blend of experience to navigate demanding issues toward sound resolutions. The emphasis here is on sound resolutions-resolutions that benefit fairly all facets of the school district - the taxpayers, the faculty, and most of all the students. Carole is a well…

I have great respect for you Mrs McAvoy . As we both have very gifted children in this school district . we both are strong supportive parents. .But the level of education and classes available to the students is decreasing. West Hempstead S.D. Responds to Letter Regarding Tax Increases

School officials say on average, West Hempstead residents' school taxes would increase 1.3 percent.

Dear Editor, Thank you for your continued reporting and dialogue on this year’s school budget and tax matters. We write this in response to the letter recently posted on the Patch titled “West Hempstead School Taxes Could Rise 5%.” While some taxes may rise by that amount as they do every year, it is also likely that many residents will experience a tax increase consistent with the school tax levy increase and that many will see a decrease in taxes. In addition to the school tax levy, property tax bills are determined by the level of taxable assessed value of the property and changes in the base proportion of the tax levy. Both the final taxable assessed value and the base proportions have yet to be determined by Nassau County. The writer …

The Wall Street Journal's Joe Connolly reported this morning on NewsRadio 88: "When it comes to real estate, schools are everything." The value of houses in the highly-regarded Rye, NY school district rose an average of 23% last year. If we care about our community, let alone the value of our homes, then adequately funding public education in our school district is not a luxury, but rather, a …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: West Hempstead School Taxes Could Rise 5%

A West Hempstead resident explains how the 2012-13 budget could impact the tax rate.

Dear Editor, Thank you for the wonderful reporting on Education and school tax matters. This year, we will be voting for the first time on a school budget formulated under the 2 percent cap. In addition, the Assessor's office announced that the assessment of our homes will be frozen for the next 4 years at the 2012 values.  Politicians have claimed that the 2 percent cap was going to protect homeowners from exorbitant increases in our school taxes and our school administrators and school boards proudly have presented budgets under the cap.  At the beginning of April, the Nassau County Assessor's Office, after receiving the proposed budgets from the each school district, published the tentative tax rates. The West Hempstead tax rate per …

Letter to the Editor: Vote For the West Hempstead School Budget

Resident and parent urges community to support the proposed budget on May 15.

To the residents of West Hempstead, The school Administration listened to the community and put forth a budget that is very fair and meets the needs of the students. I am urging everyone in the community to vote YES for the school budget this year. I have been to most of the budget meetings and workshops that the school district has held and I feel that the Administration has presented a very fair and well thought out budget. There will be no cuts in any classes or programs. Some of the new projects and programs that have been added into the budget include intramural sports for the 4th to 6th graders, a reading teacher at the High school, updates in technology and computer equipment, building and ground improvements and the High school …
