Results of the survey conducted by the West Hempstead school district Tuesday.
The West Hempstead school district brought its exit poll into the digital age this year, allowing voters to participate in the annual survey electronically after casting their ballots Tuesday in the school budget and board elections. Exactly 252, or 15 percent, of the 1,677 residents who voted on the budget this year opted to take the few minutes afterwards to sit down at one of the small laptops set-up inside the West Hempstead Middle School gym to take the survey. The district released the findings of the poll Tuesday night shortly after announcing the results of the election. (In case you missed them, the budget did pass and Trustees James Mariano and Carole Rilling were re-elected. Karen Brohm won the vacant seat.) What did the exit …

Winners of West Hempstead Board of Election races thank supporters.
Carole Rilling's and James Mariano's eighteen years of service on the West Hempstead school board wasn't enough for voters who re-elected both of them Tuesday to seventh terms. Although Mariano was not available for comment, Rilling told Patch Wednesday morning: "The West Hempstead community was heard loud and clear last night. The budget passed by hundreds of votes. Congratulations and a huge thank you to the administration for all their hard work." Regarding the school board election, she said, "The community also expressed their vote of confidence in both Jim Mariano and me, giving us a 7th term each. That is saying a lot. I have a very good feeling about the future of our town and our school district. Our community is united. My Motto…

Meanwhile, West Hempstead re-elected two current trustees, Carole Rilling and James Mariano, to seventh terms and picked former PTA President Karen Brohm to fill a vacant seat on the board. The newest member of the Malverne School Board reflects on Tuesday's win.
Shortly before 10 pm. Tuesday, Josephine Bottitta became the newest member of the Malverne Board of Education, when she was sworn in minutes after learning she won the seat that Dr. Patrick Coonan vacated when he resigned last month. With 802 votes, Bottitta, of Malverne, beat her competition, Sherwyn Besson, of Lakeview, and Joann Krudis, of Lynbrook, who garnered 239 and 329 votes respectively, but now that the race is over, she wants to see the community unite. "I'm very grateful," Bottitta told Patch after exchanging hugs with her supporters inside the gymnasium of Howard T. Herber Middle School, where the results were read Tuesday night. Then, she quickly went over to Besson and Krudis, as well as Kathleen Nolan Kasal, who ran against…

Residents elect Trustees James Mariano and Carole Rilling, and Karen Brohm to Board of Education.
West Hempstead school district residents approved the proposed 2012-2013 school budget Tuesday, and elected James Mariano, Carole Rilling and Karen Brohm to the Board of Education. There were 1,027 votes in favor and 650 against the $55,188,693 proposed budget, which is 1.46 percent higher than the 2011-2012 budget. The budget raises the tax levy - the portion of revenue that taxpayers are responsible for - by 2.58 percent. This figure is actually under the tax cap created by New York State law and therefore, only required a majority of voters for it to pass. Trustees Mariano and Rilling were re-elected to their seventh three-year terms on the school board. Mariano defeated Signorile, 990 votes to 519 votes. Rilling beat Fogg, 911 votes …

More than 1K ballots cast so far, but school official says turnout has been lower than usual.
The weather didn't deter many West Hempstead voters, young and old, from casting their votes Tuesday in the school budget and board election. By 5:30 p.m., roughly 1,000 taxpayers had voted at West Hempstead Middle School on the $55,188,693 proposed budget for the school district, and three seats on the Board of Education. "That's pretty low," District Clerk Kathie Girolamo told Patch, regarding the turnout so far. According to Girolamo, the district usually sees a total of 2,700 to 2,800 voters come out for its annual elections (last year, however, there were only 1,964), but unless they are bombarded tonight with late voters, she suspects they probably won't reach those numbers this year. The busiest hour is usually between 7 p.m. and 8…
Despite rain, turnout is higher than normal, says school official.
Despite the heavy rainfall, Howard T. Herber Middle School has seen a steady stream of voters since polls opened Tuesday morning for the Malverne school budget and board elections. "Turnout is higher than usual but not extremely high, probably due to the weather," Superintendent James Hunderfund told Patch. "We are above our norm. We're running on schedule for about 1,400 total votes." (Last year, 1,233 voted on the budget, and 1,015 for the school board election.) As of 2 p.m., roughly 500 residents had cast their ballots, but historically, most of the votes come later in the day, Hunderfund explained. Polls are open until 9 p.m. The rain deterred most voters from sticking around to speak to Patch, and those who did, preferred not to say…
