A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.
Statement From Mangano on Precinct Restructuring The following is from Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano: "Shame on Nassau County Democrat Legislators Scannell and Solages for playing politics with public safety. I refuse to play politics with public safety. I understand why the PBA opposes my plan that reduces costly police overtime and eliminates unnecessary administrative positions, saving residents millions in higher taxes. I don’t understand why a few legislators are opposing saving residents up to $20 million. One has to question whether the PBA's $600,000 in political contributions has something to do with their fear mongering approach to the issue. I had a choice. I could raise property taxes 19 percent or I could cut spending, …

A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.
NIFA Takeover Anniversary Thursday marked the one-year anniversary of the takeover of Nassau County’s finances by a state oversight board. The Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) instituted the control period after the county ran an estimated deficit of $176 million in fiscal year 2011. The Mangano administration attempted to block the takeover through the courts, but eventually dropped the suit and numerous announcements of cutbacks followed, as well as layoffs of union workers. “I welcome NIFA's oversight, but after one year I don't see much improvement in the county's financial situation and although NIFA has not been enthusiastic of [Mangano's] policies, they have still supported them,” new legislative minority leader …

New Prevention Efforts Launched in Wake of Prescription Drug Epidemic In the wake of recent tragedies related to the prescription drug abuse throughout Long Island — including last week's fatal shooting in Seaford — Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and the Nassau County Prescription Drug Misuse and Abuse Prevention Task Force announced Monday a prescription drug aversion campaign to assist pharmacists — often the last line of defense between the drug and the user and those often in the most danger from desperate drug seekers. This week, Mangano will be sending letters to all licensed pharmacists in Nassau County, containing tips for pharmacists' safety and listing treatment resources for drug addicts seeking recovery. Among the red flags…

From the Coliseum to the crime lab, there was never a dull moment in Nassau County in 2011.
7. Back in April, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano delivered his second "State of the County" address. Mangano discussed bringing Nassau out of the "state of repair" it is in and asked all politicians to come together to fix the county. 6. After months of speculation, Mangano announced in November the county's contract agreement with Veolia Transportation to manage and operate Long Island Bus under a new name – Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) – starting Jan. 1, 2012. In December, Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt and Democratic Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams both approved the contract with Veolia in what the three politicians described as successful "bi-partisan cooperation." 5. Less than one month after Mangano wrote that unions were …

A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.
Veolia Letter to the Editor The following is from Michael Setzer, vice president of Veolia Transportation. He will serve as chief executive of NICE bus. Last week, the Nassau County Legislature unanimously approved a contract that is the basis for a public-private operating partnership between the county and Veolia Transportation to operate the new Nassau Inter-County Express, or NICE, bus system. But, of even greater significance is that Nassau took a key step toward forming a true county transit system. Prior to voting, the legislature worked closely with the county executive to insert numerous amendments to the original contract that create more public involvement on proposed future adjustments to the system. The contract spells out how…

The contract maintains current fares, preserves the Able-Ride service area and restores the MTA’s planned route cuts, while saving taxpayers over $32.4 million annually and increasing public transparency and accountability. "The entire Democratic caucus is happy to have worked with County Executive Mangano and his administration, as well as the Republican majority…

I did not say that was the answer. Bill did not correct me so I assume that is what he was referring. Can you please state the FACTS as you put it? All i was asking for was clarity and a respectful tone neither of which does your …   more ›
