Lakewood Stables Voted Best Staycation Spot

West Hempstead equestrian center provides family fun without going far.

When you and your family are off from work and school, but can't afford to getaway, there are plenty of great local attractions to enjoy on your "staycation." But there was one spot in Malverne-West Hempstead that stood out from the rest. The New York Equestrian Center, formerly known as Lakewood Stables, is the best place to spend a staycation in the neighborhood and the winner a Patch Readers' Choice Award. It garnered the most votes in this week's contest. The stables offers residents of all ages horseback riding lessons and trail rides through the scenic Hempstead Lake State Park. It also runs summer camps and hosts kids parties. Although the stables is currently closed as it's being transformed into a state-of-the-art equestion center…

Hopes High For Spring Opening of Lakewood Stables

The foundation has been laid for a state-of-the-art riding facility in West Hempstead.

The Lakewood Stables in West Hempstead hopes to be open for business again this spring. By then it will have been a year since the owners, staff and riders of Lakewood watched their old, dilapidated barns get torn down. The nearly century-old structures were demolished in late April to make way for a new, state-of-the-art equestrian center to be built in their place but the lack of activity at the Eagle Avenue site in recent months has some residents and Patch readers concerned about the fate of the project.  One Patch reader from Whitestone wrote to us, saying, "What is going on with Lakewood Stables? Will it become an equestrian facility or a condo development? The stable was a haven for so many, a valued gem that has been taken away …

VIDEO: Volunteers Clear Trash to Reclaim Beach at Hempstead Lake State Park

Hundreds of volunteers spent their Saturday cleaning up the pollution along the South Pond of Hempstead Lake State Park.

Remember the images we showed you last month of the pollution at Hempstead Lake State Park - the discarded car tires and propane tanks, the piles of plastic bottles, and other trash that stretched across the shore of the North Pond? Well, thanks to a group of roughly 100 eager volunteers, it's all gone. This stretch of the park, which straddles West Hempstead and Rockville Centre, received a much needed clean-up Saturday. Adults and children, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, students from Adelphi University, and staff and riders from the Lakewood Stables, teamed up with NYS Parks Department to take back this beach. Together the volunteers and park staff hauled away several garbage bags full of trash, enough to fill up one and half dumpsters. …

It is obvious that the severity of this is due to the lack of receptacles and improper waste management at the park. It also seems as if the trash from other parts of the park are being dumped into the water. Where does the State cart the waste from the receptacles to? Does a waste management company come to haul dumpster trash? It can't be that with ALL the resources the State has, that MORE …   more ›

Volunteers Needed for Hempstead Lake State Park Clean-up

The New York State Parks Department is coordinating a clean-up of the pollution at this park in West Hempstead.

Hempstead Lake State Park is scheduled to get a much-needed clean-up later this month. To address the pollution that has overrun sections of the park, which stretches across parts of West Hempstead and Rockville Centre, the New York State Parks Department has teamed up with Lakewood Stables in West Hempstead, to organize a massive waste removal effort. But they'll need some help. They are looking for volunteers to help remove some of the debris, focusing on the North Pond area of Hempstead Lake State Park on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All clean up materials will be supplied by Long Island State Park staff and Certificates of Appreciation will be given to all volunteers. Cleanup Effort Coming to Hempstead Lake State Park

In response to Patch report on pollution at Hempstead Lake State Park, officials are working with Lakewood Stables owner to plan a cleanup effort that would involve the public.

The New York State Parks Department is working with Lakewood Stables in West Hempstead to plan a massive cleanup of Hempstead Lake State Park, but will need some extra hands. Patch reported on the pollution that has overrun parts of the local landmark earlier this week. There we found hundreds of plastic bottles, old car tires, propane tanks and other trash piled up in the park's wooded areas and along the shores of its scenic lake.   "We are organizing a cleanup effort," George Gorman, of the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, told Patch Thursday. "It's not going to happen tomorrow but probably in a few of weeks." Gorman said he spoke to Bill Brown, the park's manager, and Alex Jacobson, the owner of…

VIDEO: Hempstead Lake Landfill? Pollution Overruns State Park

One West Hempstead business owner hopes to rally the community to clean up this local landmark.

Old propane tanks, tires, a T.V. and hundreds of plastic bottles are taking over Hempstead Lake State Park. The local landmark, which covers parts of West Hempstead, Lakeview and Rockville Centre, is suffering from a major pollution problem. The trash, which stretches across the shore of the park's scenic lake and throughout the wooded areas, is detracting from the beautiful landscape and threatening the wildlife that call the park home. It's an issue Alex Jacobson, owner of nearby Lakewood Stables, which runs trail rides through the park, is hoping the community can band together to fix. He's calling upon local officials, community groups and eager volunteers to join him in a united effort to clean up Hempstead Lake "once and for all." …
